Summer 2008 - Welcome to Kauai

Kauai, an island where visitors and residents alike drop everything to "talk story" and never hesitate to give the roadside chickens the right-of-way.

Aloha and welcome to Peter (R) Sirois' site providing Buyers and Sellers with detailed information on Kauai property and rentals.

Now that Hannah has moved over to Kukui'ula Realty to be V.P. of Sales and Marketing, I will continue to publish the Barefoot Broker and updating this website.

I hope you have a pleasant Winter season.

BAREFOOT HIGHLIGHTS Summer 2008

  • We continue to mourn the death of Mayor Brian Baptiste recently. A memorial service was held on July 6th , which attracted thousands of people throughout Hawaii.
  • On July 7th the Kauai County Council convened and appointed Council member, Kaipo Asing, as acting mayor until an election can be held in November. Announced candidates so far include Mel Rapozo, Joanne Yukimura, and Bernard Cravalho.
  • After the demise of Aloha Airlines, Hawaiian and Go! have added flights to alleviate the interisland transportation challenges. Fares have risen to the $63-$83 range one way. In addition Island Air has begun service from Honolulu to Lihue on its smaller Dash 7 planes. So capacity is back, but so are higher fares.
  • Regular unleaded gas prices range from $4.46 at Costco to $4.75 in Princeville. Everyone is affected. Helicopter tour business is down. Moped and bicycle sales are up, as is ridership on the Bus.
  • The Kukui’ula commercial center is scheduled to open in early 2009. Construction is moving at a rapid pace, and the tenant list continues to grow: Tommy Bahama, Quiksilver, Peter Merriman’s fine dining restaurant and another more casual Merriman outlet.
  • The Superferry continues to operate between Oahu and Maui with two round trips most days. Service to the Big Island is on track for May 2009. There is no service to Kauai yet. There was significant community opposition to the ferry within the past year. Stay tuned.
  • On a positive note, we just finished observing a most successful Koloa Plantation Days celebration over the week of July 19-26.
